Time to put this fashion degree to good use I suppose!
This year, NYFW is FREE to view as a member of the public. Due to Covid, they have move to prerecording the shows and publishing them as short online segments where any member of the public who creates a login can watch. For me and many other fashion lovers, this is huge. I know in my lifetime I may only get to go to fashion week a few times. So getting to experience these shows has been a real treat! (Even if it’s only virtually!)
With this, naturally I took to social media to ask you guys what you wanted to see! A whopping 86% of y’all voted for me to share what I thought are the worst trends of NYFW this year, and I am here to report back these really, really…like really weird trends that I am just not here for with FW21. Ready to dive into the worst trends of NYFW ’21?

Metallic
Why. Is . Everything. Metallic. Seriously? After the 7th show that had some 80’s metallic style prom dress I gave up trying to list all the shows that had some sort of metallic in it. One show in particular though, had an entire 80’s prom dress department in it. The Bronx and Banco show was incredibly classy, I will give them that. However, two trends featured in their FW21 line up made it to my Worst of NYFW ’21 list. While some shows took the 80’s prom dress approach to metallic, some took the more dystopian route and just left me feeling like I would be ready for post apocalyptic hunger games with what I was seeing. The dystopian vibes were also a strong vibe through the accessories, but I will dive into that later. For now, feast your eyes on the 80’s prom dresses from Bronx and Banco, Bibhu Mohaparta, and Raisavanessa.

Matrix Glasses and Accessoires
I only saw 4 or 5 shows that featured these types of accessories, but in all honesty, one is too many. How many people actually look good with tiny metal frame square glasses that only cover half your eyeballs, slicked back hair, and buckles and chains? I’ll tell you who, models and that’s it. I tried to pick my brain about what could be thrilling about this. Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve been living in a pandemic ridden world for over a year? Or maybe that our world is literally burning? We are mourning the demise of civilization? Any way you look at it, it’s not really a trend I am here for, but maybe it’s more of a reflection on the current state of the world? Anyways, looking to deep into things. Here’s a gallery of the matrix accessories from Raisa Vanessa and Loring.

Cutouts, but specifically these cutouts
Now I get it, not everything is going to look good on every body type. But these types of cutouts on dresses, who does this look good on?! The bandeau style wrap around bondage vibe I get when I see these types of garments, just kind of makes me cock my head to the side. Don’t get me wrong, again they’re beautiful pieces. But again, similar to the metallic, these can be classy, but to much of a good thing…well you know how the saying goes. Enjoy these wt-fashion cutouts from the shows Jonathan Simkhai, PatBo, and Kim Shui.

Honorable “Wt-fashion” Mentions
These were the three other trends that I just cannot get behind that I saw, but didn’t see enough to make a whole section on. Please enjoy these runner ups for WT-fashion moments at NYFW ’21.
Extra Long Arms
What are you, a jellyfish? An octopus? I saw this in a couple shows, but the one that got me going “excuse me” was the Mr. Saturday show with the button down with sleeves that hit at the knees. It’s a no from me

Where’s Waldo? (But make it Fashion)
This doesn’t need an explanation. Thanks Jason Wu.

Low Rise
Why is this a thing, again? The only one who can rock a low rise is the queen herself. (Yes, I mean Brittany Spears). The fact that these are coming back just scares me and brings me back to 6th grade when I tried to be the cool kid and wear low rise, but instead got called a busted can of biscuits. Ill stick to high rise thanks.

That’s a wrap on the worst trends of NYFW ’21
There are still a couple day’s left of NYFW ’21, but so far, these are the findings. With our power and heat being so in and out, this has been a much welcomed distraction. What do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts over on IG! Trust me, I want to know if you thought these trends were just as wt-fashion as I did, or maybe you like some of these! Let’s chat about it!
